People with FASD often face serious challenges when navigating the justice system.
Difficulties with memory, impulse control, understanding consequences, and interpreting social cues can increase the likelihood of legal involvement—and also increase vulnerability.
📊 61% of adolescents and 58% of adults with FASD have been in legal trouble.
📊 35% of individuals with FASD over the age of 12 have experienced incarceration.
Despite these numbers, people with FASD are more often victims of crime than perpetrators. Without proper diagnosis and informed support, many individuals are misunderstood and mistreated in the legal system.
FASD deserves a seat at the justice table—so that courts, law enforcement, and legal professionals can provide fair, informed, and equitable treatment.
